Shy Bladder

Shy Bladder

The “shy bladder” condition refers to the inability to provide a urine sample during a drug test, often due to anxiety or medical conditions. If this occurs, the individual is given up to three hours and up to 40 ounces of water to attempt another sample. Failure to provide a sample within this time frame may be treated as a refusal to test unless medically justified. Collectors are trained to handle shy bladder cases sensitively and in accordance with federal guidelines.

Handling Shy Bladder Cases

Many individuals face anxiety that inhibits immediate sample production.

The donor is given specific time and water intake instructions to try again.

If unable to produce, a medical assessment determines if there’s a valid reason.

Proper handling prevents unfair penalties for conditions beyond the donor’s control.

Collectors follow respectful, non-invasive procedures to protect the donor’s comfort.
